Interview Question, Answers and Tips

Question:

Jane's mother has four children. The first child's name is Spring, the second child's name is Summer and the third child's name is Autumn. What is the fourth child's name?

Answer:

"The fourth child's name is Jane because she was named at the very beginning."

Google Interview Question:

You have a 3 gallon jug and 5 gallon jug, how do you measure out exactly 4 gallons?

Answer…

We know we can’t get the final result in the 3 gallon jug. It’ll overflow. We need to end up with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

First fill the 3 gallon jug.

Then pour the 3 gallons into the 5 gallon jug.

Now the 3 gallon jug is empty, and the 5 gallon jug has 3 gallons in it.

Fill the 3 gallon jug again. Slowly pour into the 5 gallon jug. Only 2 gallons will fit because it already has 3. Now it’s full.

Exactly 1 gallon is left in the 3 gallon jug.

Dump out the 5 gallon jug.

Pour your 1 gallon into the 5 gallon jug.

Fill up the 3 gallon jug one more time and pour it into the 5 gallon jug! You have exactly 4 gallons (and possibly a job at Google)

LinkedIn Interview Question:

Question

You’re in a room with three light switches, each of which controls one of three light bulbs in the next room. You need to determine which switch controls which bulb. All lights are off to begin, and you can’t see into one room from the other. You can inspect the other room only once. How can you find out which switches are connected to which bulbs?

Answer…

Let’s call the switches 1, 2, and 3.

Leave switch 1 off.

Turn switch 2 on for ten minutes.

Now turn it off and quickly turn on switch 3.

Go into the room and inspect…

The bulb that is still warm but not lit up is controlled by switch 2. The one that’s currently lit up is switch 3. The last one is switch 1

Question:

Why did you choose your profession?

Tip:

“This is the time where you can tell your story. Interviewers love this. It gives them a peek into who you are, what kind of person you are, what kind of communicator you are, what sort of drive and motivation you have,”

3 things to keep in mind that should help you further:

1. First, the interviewer is *not* out to get you. They want you to give good answers. They’re looking for someone they feel comfortable hiring! And they’d rather find that person sooner than later.

2. Next, it’s okay to say, “Hm, that’s a tough question, let me think for a minute.” No interviewer will fault you for doing this once or twice in an interview.

So don’t just blurt out an answer and rush yourself if you hear a tricky interview question that caught you completely off-guard. Take a deep breath and think it through.

3. And finally, for many of these questions, the interviewer just wants to hear your thought process.

So this is why you should never panic and never be afraid to say, “let me think for a second”  when you’re asked a tricky interview question that you’re not sure how to answer.

If you take your time and remember that sometimes employers just want to hear how you think, you’ll ace the interview and survive any tough, unexpected questions they ask.
